Schooner C.A. Thayer comes to Mare Island

Largest fleet of historic vessels on the West Coast comes to Vallejo while Hyde Street Pier is replaced

By Brendan Riley, Vallejo Times Herald, April 4th, 2025

The 1895 lumber schooner C.A. Thayer tied up Friday afternoon at Mare Island – the first of five historic vessels from the National Park Service’s Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco that will be moored at the former Navy shipyard for several years.

A crowd of about 150 people cheered and applauded as the 219-foot-long, 3-masted Thayer was moored at 3:07 p.m., after a six-hour tugboat tow from Alameda, where it had been drydocked for repairs.

There have been lengthy delays in the move, but final preparations have been completed on the Mare Island seawall, where the ships – comprising the largest fleet of historic vessels on the West Coast – will remain while the deteriorated Hyde Street Pier is replaced.
